Why Desktop Virtualization?

Desktop virtualization has emerged as a remedy to the high cost of supporting corporate computer users. According to Intel, the acquisition cost of a PC accounts for only 20-30% of the total cost, with support costs accounting for the remainder. And that’s not counting the drain on productivity of expensive knowledge workers when computer problems interrupt their work. Virtualization at the desktop level now provides a practical alternative to reduce support costs.

For example, a user machine can now be configured as easily as copying a file. Standard corporate configurations can be maintained once and used many times. Instead of spending hours troubleshooting a problem, a new virtual machine can be pushed to a user to get them productive in minutes, decreasing support costs and improving the user’s productivity. Security is increased by locking down the standard configuration. Users can easily switch between the corporate virtual machine and a separate personal virtual machine on the same PC to install any personal applications and data that might compromise the corporate environment. Employees can even work from their own home machine using a copy of the corporate virtual machine, without compromising security or increasing support costs.
